One of the best things about starting to this blog is all the rad-tastic, inspirational people I discover. I thought I would start to use my little space to introduce some of these awesome creatives to you, but don't expect any type of useful information, I'm much more interested in the things you can't google about a person. So here's how we play the game, I give a bunch of finish-this-sentence-style prompts and see what happens. Hopefully something. I hope you enjoy my Australian Creatives Series.
Rin Dawson is the absolute queen of snail mail. Her blog Papered Thoughts is just about the cutest place on the entire internet. She is a creative daydreamer who writes a hell-of-a-lotta lists, is obsessed with Harry Potter, swaps hundreds of letters, sells gorgeous handmade stationery in her Etsy store and pins amazing things on her 54 Pinterest boards. She also works at Little Paper Lane every so often which doesn't help her Washi tape addiction. She believes wholeheartedly in the positive power of love letters and, thanks to her, I do too now. What's better is that she is also a Montessori lady who works in a kindy classroom. Sigh, are you jealous of the kids that get to have her in their lives? I am!
I describe myself as a daydreaming, happy, bookish nerd with pen in hand.
I blog because I believe in kindness and light and happiness and love. And I want to share it the best way I know how - through the beautiful, yet lost, art of letter writing - I want to inspire people to put pen to paper and send a love letter down the road, across the country or over the oceans... To connect with strangers, reconnect with an old friend or stay in touch with family... The world doesn't need another status or tweet. It needs some good old fashioned love.
My ultimate weekend would entail an early morning walk, breakfast and book at a eclectic local café - a wander around my favorite bookshop and local shops (*ehem* Little Paper Lane) - rain rain rain - snuggled at home on our big couch, blankets, TV shows plus my writing supplies..
I am in love with my life. Honest to god I am. But it's taken a while. Almost 12 months ago I decided to actively chase positivity and kindness and happiness, it's always been there - floating on the outskirts - but now it's front and centre everyday. You have to wake up every morning and think to yourself, I can do this. I can be so freaking happy.
I once met a lady who told me never to undervalue myself. Best advice ever.
The most amazing meal I ever ate was at a Novotel Hotel in L.A - an amazingly huge buffet breakfast, from omelettes and waffles to fresh fruit platters and sweets - it may not sound that incredible, but after 5 months working at a summer camp it was beyond heaven.
I am at my best when I HAVE SLEPT. Seriously, does this not resonate with everybody? I just want to get enough sleep and make lovely things.
Back in my day we played outside, in the mud, with dolls and cars - and chalk on the sidewalk! We built cubby houses and used our imaginations more than iPads.
I am forever grateful to my mum. Spending 8 hours a day drawing, painting, gluing, cutting, reading and making with your toddler - is going to ensure you end up with a pretty creative adult. She also puts up with the creative chaos that spills out of my mind in the form of paper cuttings, confetti, fabric scraps and washi tape all over the lounge room - aka my studio.
To be entirely honest “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.” - Albus P. W. B. Dumbledore. I have a slight obsession with all thing Harry Potter.
Thanks so much Rin, you're a total superstar xoxo Babs
